Understanding performing rights

What a performing rights organization does, and why registration matters.

ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC are U.S. performing rights organizations (PROs). They license public performances and distribute performance royalties to the writers and publishers associated with registered works.

ASCAP

American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers

BMI

Broadcast Music, Inc.

SESAC

U.S. performing rights organization

When music is performed publicly—on radio, on television, in a venue, on a streaming service, or in a commercial—the relevant usage data must be matched to the work and the writers and publishers on record.

Missing registrations, incorrect ownership shares, or conflicting entries can result in unmatched usage or delayed distributions. Complete, current records give a PRO the information it needs to associate royalty activity with the correct parties.
